NEW YEAR’S EVE – TRADITIONS AND SMALL RITUALS TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR

NEW YEAR’S EVE – TRADITIONS AND SMALL RITUALS TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR

We have to thank Pope Gregorio XIII and his calendar in 1582 if nowadays we start the year on January first. Before it could be on March 1st, March 25th or December 25th.

To wish good luck and prosperity for the just coming new year there are little traditions and rituals:

food: eat lentils, grape and pomegranate for money, or red pepper for good luck;

clothes: wear something red to be lucky;

acts: kiss somebody unter the mistletoe for love; light a candle to illuminate the whole year;

presents: a little box with salt or a little coin are the right gift to wish prosperity.

But the best thing to do is to toast with a glass of sparkling wine, Italian of course!
